PRP or platelet-rich plasma is a preparation of platelets – taken from a person through a small blood draw, which is then put in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from our red and white blood cells – prior to treatment where it is reinfected into the scalp. It is a simple in-office procedure with no downtime. Once centrifuged, the plasma is reported to be 300% to 700% enriched with platelets concentration to more than 1 million platelets per microliter. Platelets not only provide coagulation but they also secrete several growth factors (proteins like platelet-derived growth factors, insulin-like growth factors, epidermal growth factors, keratinocyte growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, etc.) and other cell-to-cell activation molecules. The growth factors within, and released by the platelets, act on the stem cells found at the base of the hair follicles.
